Auto accident injury care begins by understanding what happened, what symptoms developed, and how those symptoms affect daily function. A PM&R physician, also called a physiatrist, is trained to evaluate conditions involving the muscles, joints, spine, nerves, brain, and functional abilities.

Whiplash is one possible injury after a crash. It describes a neck injury caused by a forceful, rapid back-and-forth movement of the neck and is commonly associated with rear-end collisions. Similar symptoms can also occur with fractures, nerve injuries, concussion, or other conditions, so the cause should not be assumed without an appropriate medical evaluation.

Some injuries require care from an emergency department, trauma team, neurologist, neurosurgeon, orthopedic surgeon, primary-care clinician, or another specialist. Physmedi may need to coordinate care with those clinicians rather than manage the underlying injury alone.

• Coordination with physical, occupational, speech, or behavioral-health professionals when relevant
• Coordination with primary-care clinicians, surgeons, neurologists, or other specialists
